What is dual constitution ?

We saw in the previous articles the dominant constitutions, when we have one of the three doshas present at more than 50% in us (Prakriti Vata, Prakriti Pitta, Prakriti Kapha). However, it often happens that we have a double or mixed constitution with two main doshas. We have a major dosha between 40-50% and a secondary dosha between 30-40%. Therefore there are six possible combinations :

  • Vata-Pitta

  • Vata-Kapha

  • Pitta-Vata

  • Pitta-Kapha

  • Kapha-Vata

  • Kapha-Pitta

The dual constitution differs from the dominant constitution given that the two doshas will be mixed in our physical appearance, our physiology and our psychology. This constitution is called birth constitution because it is fixed and cannot be changed. It follows us throughout our life, from our birth to our death.

This is why, it should not be confused with Vikriti, the state of imbalance. It can happen that one or more doshas are in excess in the body, this imbalance is the cause of diseases. Imbalances evolve during our life according to our habits and our lifestyle.

How is a Vata-Pitta person ?

The Vata-Pitta constitution is composed of four elements : air and space which form Vata, fire and water which characterize Pitta. A Vata-Pitta person will have these four elements with a greater proportion of air and space. The Vata dosha is more present than the Pitta dosha, the wind dominates over fire. This constitution can also be called the wind that ignites.

A Vata-Pitta person has to follow a Vata lifestyle in adapting it to Pitta. Her lifestyle has to be adapted to the season. In autumn and winter, seasons of aggravation of Vata, her lifestyle aims to pacify Vata. In summer, season of aggravation of Pitta, her lifestyle aims to pacify Pitta.

Physical appearance

Just like a Vata person, the face is often long and the eyes are small and mobile. The extremities are cold and blood circulation is weak. Vata-Pitta people have a thin corpulence : they are less thin than a dominant Vata but thinner than a dominant Pitta. In general, Vata-Pitta are tall people, weight loss is easy and weight gain is quite minimal.

Their skin is often a mixture of the two doshas, fine and mixed. Unlike Pitta dominants, Vata-Pitta does not fear the sun and tans easily. Hair is also a mixture of the two doshas. It is fine, curly or straight and remains fragile and dry.

Digestion is similar to a Vata dominant people. The digestion is irregular alternating between constipation and diarrhea. Vata-Pitta people are prone to flatulence and bloating. They often have a larger appetite than Vata dominants. However, they must eat in small quantities due to their weak digestive capacity.

Psychology

Vata-Pitta people are dynamic people who will initiate projects without following the project through to completion. However, they will last a little longer than Vata-dominant people thanks to the rigor of Pitta. But in all cases, it is not the outcome of the project that drives them but the fact of initiating a change, a new dynamic.

Vata-Pitta people are more passionate than Vata-dominant people. This passion will mix with the change that Vata needs. They are passionate about certain subjects, certain activities, but not in the long term.

They have a great sense of humor and adapt easily to their environment. They are sociable and original.

The quality of Pitta-dominant people of reflection and understanding will mix perfectly with the quality of Vata-dominant people to grasp concepts. Thus, Vata-Pitta people will be particularly gifted at understanding theories, analyzing them and popularizing them. They are good teachers.

One of their greatest weaknesses is their lack of anchoring. None of the two doshas has the earth element in its constitution. The earth element provides anchoring and stability. Thus, Vata-Pitta people, due to the predominance of the air element, have difficulty managing their emotions. They are hypersensitive and hyper-emotional people. Their emotions and opinions fluctuate a lot. They are often stressed, need to be reassured and seriously lack self-confidence.

Another of their weaknesses is their predisposition to dehydration. Independently of each other, the two doshas become easily dehydrated. Vata-Pitta people can suffer from dehydration, sometimes chronic, in the skin, hair or internally.

Ayurveda does not establish a hierarchy between the different constitutions. There is no constitution that will be better than another. Each constitution has its strengths and weaknesses. The whole point of knowing your constitution is to be able to better understand yourself, better know your needs and be able to respond to them appropriately with an adapted lifestyle in order to improve your quality of life.
