Gandouch

Gandouch is an Ayurvedic treatment to take care of oral hygiene. This treatment is part of dinacharya, the Ayurvedic lifestyle routine that we do every morning when we wake up. After scraping our tongue, we come to use oil to do this mouthwash.

The mouth, and especially the tongue, are very important in Ayurveda. Our tongue indicates diseases and imbalances as well as our digestive capacity. When we wake up, it is common for us to have deposits on our tongue. These are toxins, everything that our body has not been able to digest during the night. It is  important to clean this area. Taking care of your mouth allows you to take care of your digestive fire, your Agni.

Benefits

It allows the oil to capture and remove toxins from your mouth. This helps fight bad breath, improve oral hygiene and cleanse your gums.

Mouthwash strengthens your teeth and jaw. Your jaw is relaxed.

Gandouch involves the different muscles in your face which will be toned, which helps reduce wrinkles.

Finally, it improves your sense of taste.

How to perform Gandouch ?

This treatment is performed in the morning, either before brushing your teeth or after. We put between 1 and 3 tablespoons of oil in the mouth. The goal is to keep this oil in your mouth by circulating it throughout your mouth. It is advisable to keep it for between 5 and 20 minutes. During this time, you can attend to your business.

It is important not to swallow this oil, which contains all the toxins. You can spit it out in your toilet or in a tissue. Avoid spitting it directly into your sink, as this could clog your pipes in the long run.

When you are sick (cold, sore throat), you can perform this treatment several times a day.

Tip : if you are not yet familiar with this practice, start by putting small amounts of oil in your mouth for only a few minutes. Gradually, you will be able to keep the oil longer and increase the quantities.

With which oil ?

Ayurveda adapts its treatments according to the person. Thus, it is important to take into account your dominant dosha and any imbalances.

For Vata people or people with a Vata imbalance (fragile teeth), it is recommended to perform Gandouch with sesame oil.

For Pitta people or people with a Pitta imbalance (bleeding, burns, mouth ulcers, inflammations), it is recommended to use coconut oil.

For Kapha people or people with a Kapha imbalance, this practice can weigh them down even more. We will therefore favor oils or light substances such as sunflower oil, grape seed oil or aloe vera juice.

Important : always make sure to use an organic oil.
